Drago's Seafood Restaurant
The first time I had chargrilled oysters, I was at the home of one of my Cajun friends in Baton Rouge. It was a pleasant spring afternoon, and my friend was planning a cookout, little did I know that I was about to discover a new favorite food group -- CHARGRILLED OYSTERS. Yes, they are that good, and they deserve their own food group!
Our cookout was ten or more years ago when you could only find chargrilled oysters in a few spots, now they seem to be a staple at most seafood restaurants in South Louisiana. My friend told me a few restaurants where I could find chargrilled oysters and of course, he mentioned the "Original Chargrilled Oyster House," Drago's in New Orleans. Now I try to stop by Drago's whenever I am in New Orleans. Drago's has two locations in New Orleans, the original location in Metairie and another site in downtown in the Riverside Hilton. I understand that they have opened another location in Jackson, Mississippi, but I have not stopped in there yet. I am a fan of the Metairie site, but I have stayed at the Riverside Hilton just to be near Drago's!
The mixture of butter, garlic, cheese and seasonings along with the char from the grill combine with the fresh oysters to create a dish that is beyond belief. After you have finished the oysters comes the best part, that is when you take a piece of fresh French Bread and sop up some of the left-over butter sauce from the oyster shells. Most people eat them as an appetizer, but I can make a meal off a dozen (or so) and maybe a side salad.
Oddly, I spotted a limited edition Zapp's potato chip in the grocery store last week. Of course, I picked up a bag of the "Roasted Garlic" potato chips. The chips are good, but not as good as Drago's Chargrilled Oysters!
